Prerequistes: a - Spark plugs serviceable b - Valve clearance correct c - Oil temperature between 50-70C (122-158F) d - Dwell angle and ignition timing correct. e - Disconnect the accelerator cable. 1 - Turn idle screw out until there is clearance between screw and fast idle cam. 2 - Then turn screw in until it just touches the fast idle cam. 3 - From this position turn screw in futher 1/4 of a turn. 4 - Turn volume control screw in slowly until it comes to a stop, and then turn it back 2.5 to 3 compleate turns. 5 - Connect tachometer and insert thermometer for measuring oil temp. into engine in place of the oil dip stick. 6 - Check if the automatic choke is open. 7 - Start engine and set idle speed by turning the bypass screw to speed range 750-900RPM. Caution do not adjust the idle speed by turning the adjusting screw for the throttle valve. 8 - By turning volume control screw adjust to the highest idle speed, then turn back until the engine speed drops by 20-30 RPM. 9 - Reset the correct idle speed by turning the bypass screw. 10 - Reconnect accelerator cable. Lastly this all works if you are running a stock engine, stock aircleaner and with the stock jets in your carb for your year and type VW. Good Luck, Barb & Eric
